Hotel Rwanda

This is the touching story of an honest, hard-working Hutu militia leader as he tirelessly and thanklessly wipes out the insufferable Tutsi people that are infesting Rwanda (how dare they be taller!). Amazingly, this is something that actually happened in real life, but no-one paid any attention because at the time they were all obsessing over Bill Clinton’s, ahem, oral fixation.

While in general it’s a wacky joy-ride through one of Africa’s best bloodbaths, the fun is sullied a little by the presence of Paul Rusesabagina, the character played by Don Cheadle, who insists on weighing everything down with his tiresome desire to save innocent people, as if one man could spoil a party I’ve been preparing since the Belgians brought their sweet chocolate to the Dark Continent. The hubris! But I forgive him, because he was so good in “Ocean’s Eleven”.

And the best part is that, in the grand tradition of “Clueless” and “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father”, they’ve translated the film into a long-running reality show, available in clips at 3 a.m. on CNN after the farm report. (They re-set it in Darfur, but genocide is timeless -- new generations can always identify.) Oh wait, you mean that’s real reality? They’re still swimming in oceans of blood down there? I’ve gotta get my bathing suit!
